As summer draws to an end, I just wanted to give an update on Treecare, and on arboriculture in England’s capital city.
The relentless 72 day heat wave that gripped London this summer was unprecedented, and unfortunately, it adversely impacted almost everything tree related. London’s trees went into shock and frantically shed leaves to preserve whatever life was left in them.
Many Londoners left the metropolis for cooler, breezier places and many of those who stayed in the 30°+ furnace understandably did not even consider tree surgery works.
Our arborists working in these conditions faced extreme challenges. Wearing Teflon like personal protective equipment and using heavy equipment at height was made more difficult by the intense heat, where temperatures soared to 38°.
For our own health and safety during this time, we have had to prioritise works, so that dangerous, dead or dying trees were worked on primarily.
I am therefore very pleased to welcome autumn, with its cooler air and rain. We look forward to returning to normality, looking after and caring for all of London’s trees. This is what we do best.
The last government Budget did not consider our sector as working people, and the business was burdened with increased taxes but no concessions. I do not expect any better this November. Manoeuvring trucks with wood chippers in tow and loaded with heavy equipment in densely populated London is not easy, especially now that a whole network of roads throughout London has been blocked to general traffic as part of traffic ‘calming’ or residents only schemes. The result is that we need to take longer routes to reach our clients.
We are carefully costing every tree project, trying our best to not adversely impact our customers. We are here to assist our private clients with the expenses of tree works by, for example, spreading the cost in agreed instalments (subject to individual agreement, please feel free to discuss with our office staff).
